How to choose a gift for a 2 year old boy?

Choosing the right gift for a 2 year old can be a daunting task. There are so many different toys and gifts on the market that say they’re the best. We’re here to help you choose, by sifting through hundreds of products to find the best ones based on a range selection criteria including durability, safety, cognitive development and much more.

Developmental changes in a 2 year old boy

Boys undergo a range of rapid developmental changes at 2 years old. They start to gain an increased sense of awareness in the world and their skills move from curiosity to more active physical engagement. They’ll move around a lot, discovering about the surroundings and learning to communicate with other people with their new found phrases. 2 year olds are explorers in every sense of the word, they explore their senses to help them develop at this critical stage in their life. Toys are a great way to practice their newly developed skills and through repetition, they will get better and better.

Physical development

By age 2, a toddler’s physical development has seen huge improvements. They have progressed from being able to crawl, to walk, run and maybe even jump. Their first two years of development will have given them a stronger ability to use their muscles, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Gifts which include buttons, or knobs will allow your 2 year old boy to refine his muscles and coordination. It’s good to have a variety of activities for a 2 year old, as they will want to practice every day.

Communication skills

Children’s communication skills develop at different rates, however, most children will show the following characteristics when they are 2 years old.

They’ll start to engage with simple stories and picture books. Their attention span will be short, but remember that it’s all part of the improvement process to being able to read properly. The vocabulary will increase to over 100 words and they’ll be able to answer yes or no questions more easily. They may even be able to string together basic 4 word sentences such as ‘i want the ball’.

Criteria when choosing toys

When we chose our range of gifts, we considered key factors which we feel will make the best gifts. We looked for toys that are safe, fun, and improve the skills of a child. Two years old is a crucial stage in the development of a child and we want children to be able to develop as successfully as possible whilst enjoying their childhood. Some of the criteria we considered are which gifts will help them to reach their educational, communicative, and physical potential.

Safety and durability

We consider safety the top priority when recommending products. Gifts should be non-toxic and free from BPA and harmful additives. Very small pieces included in a gift are still dangerous as a two year olds sense of size and danger is still not fully developed. Toys also need to be durable so they don’t break or snap into small, sharp objects which could cause damage. Children will enjoy playing on their own at 2 years old, but they should still be supervised for their safety.

Education

School is a couple of years away, but children will be very eager to learn about the world and have an amazing ability to develop at a fast rate when they are 2 years old. Any gifts that can develop their intellectual ability will be very beneficial to a child.

Children will start trying new techniques to solve problems. They’ll get better at solving simple puzzles and will start understanding the differences between items. They often start to group toys by type or color to show their understanding of them. Fun toys are also a great way to help them enjoy learning and look forward to school.

Creative Toys

2 year olds love toys that they can stack up or take apart and rebuild them. They get satisfaction from creativity and realising they have the ability to change the world around them. We’ve chosen gifts that encourage your child’s imagination to help them grow their creative side.

Imitate Life

2 year olds aren’t capable of performing normal everyday tasks but are able to imitate them. This is a crucial step in growing up and learning to do things for themselves. Toys that imitate adult jobs such as toy phones, toy hoovers or a fake kitchen are great ways to help them understand life.   2 year olds will also often form relationships with toys that resemble animals or people and develop their communicative skills and empathy through them.
