A Buyer’s guide to choosing the best gift for a 10 year old boy

At 10 years old your boy is now in his ‘double figures’, not quite a teenager yet, but beginning to leave the years of childhood behind him.

Picking a gift for a 10 year old can be tricky because he is now at the age where he will be aware of his own likes and dislikes and so its important to know what these are. If you are buying a gift for a nephew, grandchild or family member’s child that you don’t know too well, it is important to ask for clues as to what he likes rather than take a gamble on a gift that could end up being a wasted purchase.

Although we can’t help advise on your 10 year old boy’s specific interests, we can hopefully help you save time browsing and shopping around with this selection of gifts we’ve included in this guide which are all highly rated and well reviewed.

ThinkFun Gravity Maze

The Gravity Maze by ThinkFun is one of the best selling toys worldwide. This game is fun to play and helps kids build logic, reasoning and visual perception skills.

The game works by selecting a challenge card which displays a colored pattern which will need to be matched by building with the color-coded blocks. These blocks need to be constructed in such a way that is will create a path for the marble to reach a target.

It includes 60 challenges to test your skills which range from beginner to expert to support a range of abilities.

Djubi Sling-ball Classic

Take his game of catch to the next level with this cool new twist on the game.

Unlike traditional throw and catch you have a ball with an elastic loop that you slip over the hook of the net racket to launch into the air for the other player to catch in their net.

The manufacturer claims you can launch the ball up to 125 feet in to the air.

The racket is easy to grip and makes catching much easier with its deep net.

The game includes two rackets and two balls. A perfect way to make a trip to the beach or park even more entertaining.

Pacman Ghost Light Table Lamp

How we select our gifts

Our selection of top gifts for 10 year old boys have been based on popularity, rating, reviews, value, safety and trusted sellers. We always try to cover a range of interests by picking the best from each of the following categories, sporty, creative, musical, brainiac, funny, adventurer and role play.

Sporty

If your boy aged 10 has an interest in sport then there is a lot of choice as to what gift is right for him. There are so many different sports available so it’s a good idea to try and find out whether he is more of a baseball player or football enthusiast. Balls, bats and gloves are all classic gifts that can amount to hours of fun while encouraging him to get out of the house, run around and keep fit. This is really important for physical development during this time of young adolescence. But the ‘sporty’ category can also include activities that don’t always mean popular team based sports. It can include things like trampolines, frisbees, archery, scooters, bikes, skateboards and much more.

Creative

It’s easy to assume that all young boys are interested in sport, but it is not always the case. At the age of 10, you might find that he has more of an interest in being creative and would rather spend time drawing, painting or creating crafts as opposed to being out with friends kicking a ball around. If this is the case it’s worth considering art sets, sketchbooks or even building blocks such as Lego to allow him to exercise his creative innovation. Other forms of creativity include photography, sculpting and creative writing.

Musical

In a way musical can be placed under the same category as creative, but we’ve chosen to keep it separate as misc itself is a big topic covering so many different genres. At 10 you might find that your boy has taken an interest in music having a favourite band or artist that he loves to listen to. He may want to sing along with a karaoke set which would also be a fun activity for the whole family. You may also find he has a talent for instruments and so it could be a great idea to look at kids drum kits, recorders or kids guitars which are similar to an adult’s version only smaller in size.

Brainiac

Another category we have included is ‘brainiac’, which includes gifts such as board games allowing for social activity as well as encouraging tactical thinking. Under this category also comes puzzle games which promote problem solving abilities and brainiac type books such as riddles and mysteries. All of which are extremely important for sharpening your child’s mind and prepare him for all challenges he will face during his time at school, college and later life.

Funny

Some boys enjoy a healthy dose of mischief and a good laugh and what better way to channel this than a gift that keeps them entertained for long periods while making them laugh and in some cases socially active. This category can fall under many others as there are many board games that can promote a good laugh as well as outdoor adventurer type games. This funny dress up, water pistols, joke books and toys that make sounds.

Adventurer

The adventurer category includes mostly outdoor gifts that bring out the little explorer in your 10 year old. Our selection of gifts here include explorer sets that contain things like binoculars, compasses and torches. You’ll also find bug collecting kits or animal and bird watching guides to help them explore and learn about their surroundings. We also use this category for scooters or bikes as these help them to get out further and take them on an adventure.

Role play

Role play is what we use to describe imaginative play where your boy can pretend to be a character from one of his favourite shows for example or become something created by his own imagination. The gift you would see under this category include props such as toy weapons or masks and fancy dress outfits. You would also see theme based toys such as a lightsaber for a Star Wars fan or a wand for the Harry Potter fans.
